The pivot point of the North Bund
For this short stay in Shanghai, the site selection logic was very simple: it needed to be able to quickly connect to the rail transit network and go downstairs to directly enter the North Bund riverside, so Ocean Hotel Shanghai was located at 1171 Dongdaming Road, Hongkou District. The four-star old brand, which opened in 1989, has a 28 story building and is located in the North Bund shipping cluster area. Judging solely from its location, it has already won half of the price.
In terms of transportation, the Ocean Hotel belongs to the trinity of "walking+subway+crossing the river". The official estimate is that it takes about 5 minutes to walk to Metro Line 4 and Line 12. The actual measurement is closer: Tilanqiao Station is about 360 meters away, Dalian Road Station is about 680 meters away, and Line 12 Tilanqiao Exit 1 is only a few minutes away; Line 4 can directly connect to Shanghai Station (about 5.9 kilometers), and Line 10 can also transfer to Line 4 smoothly. Hongqiao Airport is just over 18 kilometers away, and Pudong Airport is around 38 kilometers away. Although there is a need to transfer in the direction of the airport, the frequency of trips is high and the tolerance is high. What's even better is the flexibility of crossing the river - turn right when you go out and you'll be at the Fair Road Ferry. The 2 yuan ferry will take you directly to Lujiazui, which is more interesting than taking a taxi through the Xinjian Road/Dalian Road Tunnel; For self driving, there is a hotel owned parking lot, which is a scarce resource for the valuable land on the North Bund.
The surrounding area is the real backbone of this house. Downstairs is the North Bund Raffles City (approximately 230 meters walk from Exit 1 of Tilanqiao Station), a one-stop restaurant, coffee shop, and supermarket; Expanding further, the Baiyulan Square is about 600 meters away, and the top 320 meter observation platform offers a 360 degree view of the Bund and Lujiazui. The riverside route is particularly comfortable: turn left outside and enter the North Bund Riverside Green Space, walk for about ten minutes to the viewing platform, which can integrate the Bund World Architecture Complex with the "three piece set" of Lujiazui, with fewer people than the Bund and denser scenery than Century Park. This is the most stunning part of my trip.
The cultural pedestrian circle is also dense: the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Memorial Hall (No. 62 Changyang Road) is about 200 meters away, and Huoshan Park, the former site of the US Jewish Joint Relief Committee, and the old residence of Blumenthal are all within a radius of one to two hundred meters; The Xiahai Temple is about 400 meters away, and there is a strong smoke and fire atmosphere in the old Hongkou area around Kunming Road. Go 2km east to the Bund, 1.4km to Xintiandi, and go south across the river to Lujiazui. The basic starting price of taxi may be slightly higher.
The repeated phrase in guest reviews: "The subway is nearby, the riverside is nearby, and the Raffles City is nearby" - these three "nearby" words, when combined, basically cover business and reception Citywalk、 There are three mainstream demands for strolling along the river. Of course, to be honest, the old building has a relatively large volume, and the elevators are slightly tight during the morning rush hour; The nighttime pedestrian flow in the Tilanqiao area is not as lively as Nanjing Road/Huaihai Middle Road. It is recommended to take the main road if traveling alone late. But for travelers who prioritize 'flow efficiency', Ocean Hotel Shanghai is like a stable anchor on the North Bund's pivot point - towards the depth of Puxi, towards the skyline of Pudong, and towards the ferry on the river, with a comfortable radiation radius. Returning from a walk along the riverbank at night, I looked up and saw the curved outline of the 28th floor shining in the reflection of the river. Suddenly, I felt that when it comes to choosing a hotel, sometimes the right location wins the experience by a large margin.River scenery and old times
For this short stay in Shanghai, I didn't choose a new-style design hotel, but instead stayed at the Ocean Hotel Shanghai located at 1171 Dongdaming Road, Hongkou District. The old four-star, 28 story building under COSCO Shipping, which opened in 1989, is known as the "first revolving restaurant in Shanghai" and is located on the banks of the Huangpu River in the North Bund. These few points alone are enough to make people curious.
From Hongqiao, transfer from Metro Line 10 to Line 4 and walk about 800 meters to Exit 3 of Dalian Road Station; If you take Line 12 to Tilanqiao Station, which is closer, about six to seven hundred meters away, taking a taxi to Lujiazui only costs a starting price. Go out and turn right at the ferry of Pingyuan Road, turn left at the North Bund Riverside Trail, walk for more than ten minutes to White Magnolia Square and Raffles, go for about 2 kilometers to the Bund, and take the Xinjian Road Tunnel to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, which is more than three kilometers away. This kind of "Puxi sees Pudong" station is the most difficult part to replicate.
The front desk is 24 hours a day. When checking in, I proactively asked if I wanted a river view and handed over my room card along with a handwritten welcome card. I live in a big bed with river view on the side of the high-rise building, about 20 square meters, with a wooden tone, and an overall "old but slightly old" approach: the air conditioner awesome, the bed is fluffy, and the shower water pressure is stable, but some hardware and corners can see the sense of age. Occasionally, guests mention a slight smell of old buildings, and my room is OK. The most impressive thing is the french window - you can catch a glimpse of the gap of Lujiazui's "three piece set" in the daytime. At night, the lights of the Bund are gradually on, and you can lean against the windowsill for a while, which is more eye-catching than many Wanghongjiang view houses.
The one I really want to remember is the 27th floor "Yipo Spiral Palace". As the first revolving restaurant in Shanghai, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower slowly slides from the front to the side in a circle of about 90 minutes, and the Huangpu River bends in an arc. I only go up at the breakfast time. I need to grab it by the window. The croissants, fried eggs and small Wonton are in order, which is worth that perspective. Shenyue Restaurant on the fourth floor makes local dishes. Sauteed Shrimps in oil and crab bean curd are old Shanghai flavors. Many repeat guests come here specially for this.
In terms of supporting facilities, the indoor swimming pool and fitness center are complete, but the small swimming pool and tight parking spaces are common problems in old buildings. It is recommended to arrive early or park in nearby commercial areas for self driving. There are limited parking spaces and no underground parking garage, so it's good to have a psychological expectation in advance.
Returning from a walk by the riverside at night, the lobby lights were warm yellow, and the concierge nodded in greeting, without excessive enthusiasm or coldness - a sense of propriety left by state-owned foreign-related hotels in the last century. Of course, the hardware cannot catch up with the new hotel, but Ocean Hotel Shanghai has managed to balance the three aspects of 'North Bund River View+Rotating Restaurant+Old School Service' very well. If you mind the degree of newness, you can take a detour; If you want a slow paced view of Pujiang and Lujiazui, Ocean Hotel would be a stylish choice. Before leaving, looking back at the curved outline of the 28th floor, I suddenly understood why someone would be willing to live there for more than ten years - it's not stunning, but it's enough for Shanghai.
